Passport Ranking 2026

The La Vida Passport Value Index

The World’s Passports, Ranked by What They’re Actually Worth

Most passport rankings answer one question: how many countries can you enter without a visa? It’s a fair start, but it treats every destination as equal. For anyone weighing a second citizenship as a business or lifestyle decision, that’s the wrong measure.

The La Vida Passport Value Index ranks all 199 passports by the value of the access they unlock, across 227 destinations. Alongside the raw destination count, we weight every passport on two further dimensions that standard indices ignore: the share of world GDP it opens up (what matters for business and investment) and the share of global travel it reaches (what matters for how and where people actually go). The result is a ranking built for real-world mobility, not just a country tally.

What the 2026 data shows

On this basis, Singapore holds the top position, its passport unlocking 99.5% of world GDP and 99.7% of international travel — as close to total global access as any document comes. Europe’s strongest performers cluster just behind with the United Kingdom at 30th (97.2% GDP reach). The United States, often assumed to sit near the top on country counts, ranks 39th once economic access is weighted — it reaches just 80.2% of world GDP, held back by the destinations its holders still can’t enter freely.

The shift in method reshuffles the table in ways a simple count never would. The UAE which sits high in simple country-count rankings, is relegated here as the value of its destinations is put under scrutiny. At the other end, Pakistan (188th, 6.5% GDP reach), Nigeria (189th, 6.2%) and Afghanistan (199th) mark some passports whose holders stand to gain the most from a second citizenship.

That gain is exactly what our tool measures. A Caribbean investment passport such as Grenada — 63rd on the Index, reaching 179 destinations, 59.6% of world GDP and 79.4% of global travel — becomes far more powerful when paired with an existing passport, together closing most of the access gap.

See where any passport ranks, then model what a second one adds — compare passports with the La Vida tool.

GDP reach is the share of world GDP (World Bank 2023) a passport accesses visa-free; travel reach is the share of world international visitor arrivals (UN Tourism 2023). Destinations cover 199 countries and 28 territories. eVisa and visa-on-arrival count as access. Figures from the La Vida Passport Value Index, June 2026. See the methodology.

How La Vida’s Ranking Is Built for Citizenship by Investment

Most passport rankings are built for a general audience, often travellers and headlines. The La Vida Passport Value Index is built for a specific decision: whether to acquire a second citizenship through investment or donation, and which one delivers the most. A second passport is the result of that citizenship, and its value is what our ranking is designed to measure. Which is why it answers a question that many other indices fail to do so.

The passport’s own country counts

When you acquire a citizenship, you gain the right to live in, work in and enter that country itself — a real, tangible benefit of the investment or donation that secured it. Some indices exclude the issuing nation from a passport’s score, effectively pretending that access is worth nothing. For someone acquiring that citizenship, it is often the single most valuable thing the passport confers, so we count it.

Access is weighted by value

Reaching 180 destinations means little if they’re the world’s smallest economies. We weight every destination twice over: by its share of world GDP — what matters for business, banking and investment — and by its share of global travel, which reflects where people genuinely want and need to go. Two passports with an identical country count can unlock very different worlds, and only a value-weighted measure shows the difference.

EVisa access is real access

A destination reachable on a straightforward electronic visa is open to you in practice. For clients from restricted-passport countries — precisely those a citizenship by investment or donation serves — that route is often the difference between going and not going. We count eVisa access as access, because in the real world it often is and a second passport can convey that advantage.

Territories are scored on their own rules

Many overseas territories set entry requirements independently of their sovereign state, so a passport can reach a country yet still face restrictions at its territories — or gain access others miss. We assess these on their actual, published policies rather than assuming they inherit the mainland’s, giving a truer picture of where a passport genuinely takes you.

What do you gain – We measure incremental value

This is the measure that matters most to a client and the one no simple country-count ranking captures. If you already hold a strong passport, a second one is only worth what it adds on top of what you have. Our tool models exactly that: the marginal destinations, GDP and travel a new citizenship unlocks beyond your current one — so the value you’re investing or donating for is the value you actually gain, not a number you already own.

Taken together, these principles make the La Vida Passport Value Index the measure designed for our clients and the CBI industry. It doesn’t just rank passports; it ranks them the way someone acquiring a citizenship by investment or donation needs to see them — by the real, additional, economically weighted access that citizenship delivers.
