Sao Tome and Principe has been categorized as a ‘fragile economy’ by the World Bank, being ‘vulnerable’ to changes owing to its remote location and underdeveloped infrastructure and institutions. Additionally, it is acknowledged as one of the least economically developed nations globally. For high-net-worth investors, it may be prudent to explore alternative opportunities in other countries for acquiring second citizenship or residency.
Currently, Sao Tome and Principe do not provide opportunities for citizenship through investment. However, both investors and nationals of Sao Tome and Principe may find several other CBI initiatives beneficial. Popular alternatives are available in the Caribbean, including the St. Lucia Citizenship by Investment programme. This programme contributes to the economic growth of St. Lucia by attracting investments from individuals seeking to obtain citizenship rights and a second passport. By making substantial investments, usually in real estate or government funds, individuals can attain citizenship in St. Lucia, affording them the advantage of visa-free access to 158 countries.
At present, the island state does not offer any residency options through investment. Residency by investment, often known as Golden Visa programmes, enables foreign investors to obtain a long-term residency visa by making a substantial investment in a country, typically through real estate or government bonds. Numerous European countries provide such programmes. For alternative possibilities, investors may consider initiatives like the Malta Golden Visa programme.
The passport of Sao Tome and Principe is among the least powerful passports, providing access to only 74 countries, which represents 6.9% of global GDP and 14.6% of worldwide travel. Consequently, it holds the 150th position in La Vida’s comprehensive Global Passport Ranking.
Sao Tome and Principe nationals and high net worth investors would be better served by considering stronger passports available through various citizenship by investment programmes. For instance, the Dominica passport ranks 65th, offering significantly greater global travel freedom.
