Citizenship and Residency by Investment Programmes

Currently there is no formal residency or citizenship by investment programme offered by Liechtenstein. Such programmes allow individuals to obtain citizenship or residency rights in select countries through substantial investment. This investment most often is in real estate, national development funds, or local businesses. Such golden visa programmes can be found elsewhere in Europe, in countries such as Portugal and Hungary.
With no formal residency by investment programme, there are limited options for obtaining a residency visa in Liechtenstein. Residency options in Liechtenstein are generally based on employment, family reunification, or other specific criteria. Only a limited number of residency visas are given out for Liechtenstein. 72 permits per year are issued to EEA citizens, while Swiss citizens are issued 17 per year. Citizens of other nationalities have limited options. While the principality has restrictive residency options, after five years of living there with temporary residency, one can apply for permanent residency.
Liechtenstein has a strong passport ranking of 38th on La Vida’s comprehensive Global Passport Ranking. This would make the principality an alluring option for global investors seeking the benefits of its visa-free access to 192 countries, including 80.6% of world wealth (GDP) and 92.1% of global travel.
