Botswana combines a stable economy, a strong record on governance and substantial diamond and mineral reserves. It operates no investment migration program at present, though an agreement to establish one has been signed.

Botswana Citizenship By Investment

Botswana does not yet have a formal Citizenship by Investment program in place. An agreement has been signed to launch such a program, expected to be introduced in due course, which would create new opportunities for foreign investors seeking citizenship in Africa. Nothing has launched, and no thresholds or application framework have been published.

Investors may wish to consider the options already available. São Tomé and Príncipe offers a route to citizenship within Africa at one of the lowest entry points anywhere, though the passport it delivers ranks below Botswana’s own on global access.

The Caribbean nations provide long-established alternatives, with Grenada a particularly popular choice among global investors, and Antigua And Barbuda, St Lucia, Dominica and St Kitts And Nevis offering comparable routes in four to eight months.

Botswana Residency By Investment

Botswana has no formal residency by investment or golden visa program. Such initiatives allow foreign investors to secure long-term residency through a substantial investment in the host country.

Europe offers several established options. The Portugal Golden Visa requires a qualifying fund investment from €500,000 and asks for seven days a year in the country, with permanent residence available after five years.

The Greek Golden Visa requires property investment from €400,000 across most regions, rising to €800,000 in Athens, Thessaloniki and the larger islands, with a lower €250,000 tier for qualifying conversions and restorations.

The Malta Permanent Residence Program grants permanent residence through a combination of government contribution, property lease or purchase, and a charitable donation.

Botswana Passport and Strength Ranking

Botswana ranks 128th of 199 on the La Vida Passport Value Index. The Botswana passport reaches 95 of the world’s 227 destinations without a prior visa, representing 17.9% of world GDP and 22.5% of global travel measured by international visitor arrivals.

Botswana nationals require advance visas for the United States, the United Kingdom, the Schengen Area, China and Japan. Those five destinations account for most of the gap between the destination count and the 17.9% economic reach.

More powerful passports are available through citizenship by investment. The St Lucia passport ranks 99th on the Index with 179 destinations, 39.3% of world GDP and 73.9% of global travel. Grenada sits 63rd with 179 destinations and 59.6% of world GDP, more than triple the economic reach a Botswana passport provides alone.
