Belgium sits at the centre of the EU, with Brussels hosting major European institutions and a highly international business community. Its multilingual workforce, strong transport links and access to neighbouring markets make it attractive to investors.

Belgium Golden Visa

Belgium does not operate a standard Golden Visa with a published minimum investment or a passive property or fund route. However, investors can pursue residence through case-by-case business structures. This is often marketed as the Belgium Investor Visa or Belgium Residence Program. For passive European residency, consider the Portugal Golden Visa or Greece Golden Visa.

Belgium Residence Program

Non-EEA and non-Swiss investors may establish a new Belgian company, acquire or invest in an existing business. The applicant must take an active role in the business as a founder, director, active shareholder or self-employed professional. A passive investment or share purchase is not sufficient. The business must be commercially viable and provide economic, innovative, social or cultural value.

Belgium does not set a nationwide minimum investment for this route. The amount required depends on the business, region and proposed activity. Figures of €250,000 to €500,000 quoted elsewhere are commercial estimates rather than official qualifying thresholds.

Belgium Professional Card

The Professional Card is the official work authorisation for most nationals from outside the EEA and Switzerland who will actively work in Belgium as a self-employed entrepreneur, company director or business owner. It is separate from the residence permit, although the two processes are often used together.

Applications are assessed by the relevant regional authority and normally require a credible business plan, relevant experience, sufficient funding and evidence of economic value.

Belgium Citizenship by Investment

Belgium does not offer Citizenship by Investment. Investment or company ownership does not create a direct right to a Belgian passport. After five years of legal residence, some applicants may qualify to acquire Belgian nationality by declaration, provided they meet residence status, language, social integration and economic participation requirements. This covers 96.7% of global GDP and 98.0% of the worldwide visitor market.
