Bangladesh, while not a typical destination for high-net-worth investors seeking citizenship by investment (CBI) programmes, offers unique economic opportunities within its emerging market. The country’s growing sectors in textiles, technology, and renewable energy, combined with a commitment to implementing investor-friendly policies, position it as a noteworthy consideration for those interested in exploring untapped markets. Despite its potential for economic engagement, the absence of a formal CBI programme and potential limitations regarding passport strength require careful evaluation by investors prioritizing global mobility alongside investment opportunities.

BANGLADESH CITIZENSHIP INVESTMENT

Currently, Bangladesh lacks a clearly defined citizenship by investment programme. The procedure for obtaining citizenship in Bangladesh follows standard legal protocols. The Central Bank of Bangladesh website suggests “Citizenship by investing a minimum of US $ 500,000 or by transferring US$ 1,000,000 to any recognised financial institution”. Although there is little mention of this elsewhere and certainly there is no international marketing of any such programme.

BANGLADESH RESIDENCY INVESTMENT

Foreign investors interested in obtaining permanent resident status in Bangladesh can do so by making a significant economic investment. Specifically, a minimum investment of $75,000 in any local company is required. This initiative aims to attract foreign investors, encourage economic participation and foster long-term partnerships between international entrepreneurs and the Bangladeshi business landscape. More favourable investor visa programmes exist elsewhere and several popular Golden Visa options can be found in Europe.

BANGLADESH PASSPORT STRENGTH AND RANKING

In La Vida’s Global Passport Ranking 2024, Bangladesh holds a lower position at 189. If the country were to formalise the introduction a second citizenship programme, foreign investors would gain visa-free entry to only 55 countries, constituting 3.5% of global GDP. Trends suggest that many Bangladeshi citizens look to obtain a second citizenship elsewhere to grant them greater freedom of movement. Stronger passports exist through several other citizenship by investment (CBI) programmes in particular in the Caribbean with the likes of St Kitts, St Lucia and Antigua.
