Japan, known for its advanced economy and technological innovation, attracts high net worth investors seeking stability and growth. With its strong rule of law and transparent business practices, Japan offers a secure investment environment. Real estate in Tokyo and Osaka provides lucrative opportunities, though with a premium price tag. The country’s stringent citizenship requirements mean a long-term commitment, but investors are rewarded with an exceptional quality of life, rich cultural heritage, and strategic access to Asia-Pacific markets, making Japan a desirable location for citizenship and a second residence. Japan is especially attractive to investors from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, and Australia who are looking for a safe and stable base in East Asia.

Japan Golden Visa

Japan does not currently offer a golden visa or direct citizenship by investment programme similar to those offered by some other countries. Such golden visa programmes often allow individuals to obtain citizenship or residency rights through substantial investment, typically in real estate, national development funds, or local businesses.

Japan Residency and Citizenship

Japan does offer various residency options for foreign nationals, including business investors and skilled professionals. These options are not citizenship routes but provide the opportunity to live and work in Japan under specific circumstances. Residency in Japan is highly sought after due to the country’s world-class healthcare, education, and public safety. Particularly for those interested in establishing companies or investing in local enterprises in key regions such as Kanto, Tokyo and Osaka.

Japan Investor/Business Manager Visa

This visa is designed for foreign investors and individuals who want to start or manage a business in Japan. To qualify, you generally need to meet certain investment and job creation requirements. The minimum investments are typically ¥5,000,000 in a new company or ¥2,500,000 in an existing business.

Japan Skilled Professional Visa

Japan has a skilled professional visa category that allows highly skilled foreign professionals to work in various fields, including engineering, healthcare, and academia. Many professionals are drawn to Osaka’s thriving biotech sector or Nagoya’s automotive and manufacturing industries, which offer numerous career opportunities.

Permanent Residency

Foreign nationals who have lived in Japan for a specific number of years and meet certain criteria may apply for permanent residency, which allows them to live and work in Japan indefinitely. The time required is dependent on the type of visa you have already, and number of points acquired on the Point Evaluation Mechanism. Permanent residency is particularly valuable for families seeking long-term stability, access to Japan’s excellent education system, and the ability to purchase property in desirable neighbourhoods.

Long-Term Resident Visa

This visa is for foreign nationals who have family ties with Japanese citizens or other long-term residents in Japan.

Country Passport Strength and Ranking

Japan has an extremely strong passport, ranking 1st overall in La Vida’s comprehensive Global Passport Ranking. If Japan were to introduce a Citizenship by Investment programme, this passport would be a very strong incentive for investors. It boasts visa-free access to 198 countries worldwide, as well as visa-free access to 95.1% of the world’s wealth (as measured by GDP) and 96.1% of the global travel popularity. Unfortunately, Japan has yet to offer a citizenship by investment programme. For investors and business people from countries with more limited travel access, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, or Russia, Japan’s passport strength is highly desirable.
