Qatar Residency and Citizenship by Investment.

Qatar

Qatar is an attractive destination for high-net-worth individuals due to its robust economy, stable political environment, and strategic location. The country offers various investment opportunities, especially in sectors like real estate, finance, and energy.

Qatar Golden Visa

While Qatar does has not formally labeled its programme as a “Golden Visa,” it has established a clear and attractive residency-by-investment route through approved real estate ownership. In 2025, Qatar launched a new tier allowing temporary, renewable residency for property investors at a significantly reduced threshold. Alongside the existing permanent residency route for higher-value property purchases.

Qatar Residency by Investment

There are now two routes available under Qatar’s evolving residency by investment framework:

Temporary Residency – One Year, Renewable

  • Investment Threshold: Minimum QAR 730,000 (approx. USD 200,000)
  • Residency Duration: One year, renewable
  • Applicants must purchase property in designated foreign-ownership zones such as Lusail or The Pearl.
  • Minimum Stay: 90 days per year

This new tier is designed to capture mid-market investor demand and sits competitively within regional pricing.

Permanent Residency – Real Estate Owners

  • Investment Threshold: QAR 3.65 M (approx. USD 1M)
  • Residency Duration: Permanent residency
  • Applicants may qualify for permanent residency, though approvals are capped at 100 per year.
  • No minimum stay requirement

This tier remains Qatar’s main long-term residency pathway and offers a stronger status than the temporary route.

For those seeking a more affordable residency alternative in the Gulf, the UAE Golden Visa programme offers a lower cost option starting from $50,000 for a two-year renewable residency.

Qatar Citizenship by Investment

Qatar does not offer a citizenship by investment programme that allows individuals to acquire citizenship solely through making a financial investment in the country. Qatar’s citizenship process typically involves naturalisation, which has residency requirements, good moral character criteria, and other conditions. For those looking for a second passport from a nearby Islamic nation, Turkey’s Citizenship by Investment Programme could serve as an alternative.

Qatar Passport Strength and Ranking

Qatar ranks 96th on La Vida’s comprehensive Global Passport Ranking. The Qatari passport offers visa-free access to 109 countries, accounting for 40.6% of worldwide travel and 40.8% of world wealth (measured in GDP).
