Citizenship through Bitcoin Investment

The government of El Salvador has passed a law granting citizenship to bitcoin investors who make a donation to the government. Investors will receive expedited citizenship in return for their donations. The law was passed on December 21, 2023. The law does not define a minimum investment.

El Salvador Freedom Visa Program

El Salvador also offers a residency visa with a pathway to citizenship for investment of $1 million into the economy through Bitcoin or USDT. The programme is available to the first one thousand investors.

Bitcoin as Currency

El Salvador made a groundbreaking move by adopting Bitcoin as legal tender. In June 2021, the Salvadoran Congress approved President Nayib Bukele’s proposal to embrace Bitcoin, marking it the first country to do so. This historic decision, allows Bitcoin to be used for all transactions alongside the U.S. dollar, which has been El Salvador’s official currency since 2001.

Residency and Citizenship in El Salvador

Residency of El Salvador can lead to citizenship after five years or one year for nationals of Spain or Latin American countries. The new law for bitcoin donations looks set to expedite that process.
