Cyprus Passport Access in 2026

Cyprus’ Golden Visa program offers a long-term pathway that may ultimately lead to citizenship and a passport. The Cypriot passport provides access to 192 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 84.6% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 70.7% of global GDP and 91.2% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.

Countries & Territories Breakdown

A Cypriot passport reaches a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.

• 150 destinations fully visa-free
• 32 with visa on arrival
• 3 with a simple electronic travel authorization (eTA)
• 7 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore.

That leaves 35 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.

But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story

For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.

At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.

Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.

La Vida Measures Passport Value Differently

That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:

• Its share of global GDP (World Bank)
• Its share of international visitor arrivals (UN World Tourism Organisation)

On that basis, a Cypriot passport provides access to:

• $74.2 trillion of global GDP (70.7% of the world economy)
• 1,292.9 million international visitor arrivals (91.2% of worldwide travel)

In other words, the value of a Cypriot passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.

Travel Value – Top Destinations by Visitors

What this means

A Cypriot passport provides access to destinations that account for more than nine out of every ten international leisure and business trips made worldwide.

Business Value – Top Destinations by GDP

Some of the largest economies by GDP that a Cypriot passport grants access to are China, Germany, Japan, India and the UK. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

What this means

A Cypriot passport reaches destinations responsible for around seven out of every ten units of global economic output – a stronger base than the raw destination count alone suggests, since it now includes China, though still narrower than some other European passports in this series, as Cyprus does not currently have visa-free access to the United States.

Cyprus’s Permanent Residency program is one of Europe’s fastest and most straightforward investor routes: a single visit to Cyprus every two years is enough to maintain status, and the country is actively working toward full Schengen Area accession, with the government targeting 2026. Cyprus’s previous citizenship-by-investment program closed in November 2020. The Permanent Residency program is now Cyprus’s principal investment-based immigration route.

The Cypriot Citizenship Pathway

Citizenship becomes possible after eight years of genuine residency in Cyprus – not just the periodic visits needed to maintain PR status – and requires B1-level Greek language proficiency alongside a civic knowledge test.

It’s also worth being transparent here: a Cypriot passport’s weighted GDP and travel access, while still reaching a high proportion of destinations by raw count, falls well short of Portugal, Italy, Greece or Malta’s passports, primarily because Cyprus is not currently part of the US Visa Waiver Program. Investors whose end goal is specifically the strongest possible eventual passport may find our Portugal Golden Visa program more compelling – citizenship there is available after five years, with no comparable language barrier.

Cyprus Golden Visa: Residency by Investment

Cyprus currently offers a Golden Visa program through real estate investment, granting non-EU nationals and their families permanent EU residency. A previous citizenship-by-investment program ran until November 2020 but is now closed; the real estate route below is the only investment-based pathway currently available. From a minimum investment of €300,000 (plus VAT and associated costs) in new residential or commercial property – which can be split across up to two qualifying properties – investors and their families can obtain permanent residency, maintained with just one visit to Cyprus every two years. Citizenship can be applied for after eight years of genuine residency, subject to Greek language and civic knowledge requirements. Cyprus is a full EU member state and is targeting Schengen Area accession in 2026.
