Portugal’s Golden Visa program offers a long-term pathway to gain citizenship and a passport. The Portugal passport provides access to 214 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 94.3% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 99.4% of global GDP and 99.6% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
A Portuguese passport reaches a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.
That leaves just 13 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to a island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, a Portuguese passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of a Portugal passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)
A Portuguese passport reaches most of the world’s most popular destinations including France, Spain, the USA and Italy. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

A Portuguese passport provides access to destinations that account for virtually all international leisure and business trips made worldwide — more than 99 out of every 100.
Some of the largest economies by GDP that a Portuguese passport grants access to are the USA, China, Germany, Japan and India. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

Portugal’s Golden Visa stands apart from most residency-by-investment programs in one important respect: it asks the least of the investor. With a minimum physical presence requirement of just 14 days every two years, it is one of the few EU pathways that combines full family residency and an eventual EU passport with no relocation requirement at all – making it a genuine “Plan B” rather than a program that competes with an investor’s existing life and business elsewhere.
For internationally mobile investors and entrepreneurs, that flexibility often matters as much as the passport’s eventual reach. Portugal offers both: immediate Schengen-area residency for the whole family, and – for those who stay the course to naturalization – a passport among the most globally capable in existence.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked. Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what a Portuguese passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with Portugal’s (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations a second citizenship would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would a Portuguese passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares Portugal with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.
Compare your passports →Portugal offers one of Europe’s most flexible residency by investment programs for families. From a minimum investment of €500,000 into a qualifying private equity or venture capital fund – plus legal and government fees – investors and their families can obtain Portuguese and EU residency, with a pathway to permanent residency after five years and citizenship after ten.
La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyze not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.
