UAE Passport Access in 2026
A UAE passport provides access to 210 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 92.5% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 71.8% of global GDP and 92.0% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
Countries & Territories Breakdown
Emirati passport holders can access a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.
- 147 destinations fully visa-free
- 36 with visa on arrival
- 6 with a simple electronic travel authorization (eTA)
- 21 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore.
- Visa-free 147
- Visa on arrival 36
- ETA / eTA 6
- eVisa 21
- Visa required 17
That leaves just 17 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
La Vida Measures Passport Value Differently
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
- Its share of global GDP (World Bank)
- Its share of international visitor arrivals (UN World Tourism Organisation)
On that basis, a UAE passport provides access to:
- $75.2 trillion of global GDP (71.8% of the world economy)
- 1,303.6 million international visitor arrivals (92.0% of worldwide travel)
In other words, the value of a UAE passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)

La Vida’s Expert Insight
A UAE passport combines strong Gulf regional standing with meaningful access across Asia and Africa, including entry to China – a combination still uncommon among Western-issued passports. Its GDP and travel-value scores (71.8% and 92.0% respectively) sit below the near-total figures typical of the strongest EU and Caribbean passports in the La Vida Index, reflecting more limited access to a small number of major Western economies rather than a weak passport overall.
The UAE Does Not Grant Citizenship Through Investment
The UAE has traditionally offered residency permits to foreign nationals rather than citizenship, and this remains the case for investors today. A 2021 legal update opened a narrow route to UAE citizenship for individuals with exceptional talents, but candidates must be nominated and evaluated by the UAE’s Cabinet, Executive Councils or the courts, must speak fluent Arabic, and must meet a residency period – it is not an investment route, and it is not something an investor can apply for directly. Investors whose goal is specifically a second citizenship are better served by direct citizenship by investment options such as Grenada, Antigua & Barbuda, or Portugal’s Golden Visa, which includes a pathway to citizenship.
Why Passport Access Matters
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
- International business connections
- Family relocation planning
- Education opportunities
- Cross-border banking
- Property investment overseas
- Lifestyle flexibility
- Long-term geopolitical diversification
- Global tax efficiency
Discover How the UAE Compares With Your Current Passport
When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked. Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what a UAE passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with a UAE passport (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations it would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would a UAE passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares the UAE with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.

The UAE has traditionally offered residency permits to foreign nationals rather than citizenship. Foreign investors seeking long-term residency are advised to apply through the UAE’s Golden Visa program, one popular route being the acquisition of property valued at a minimum of AED 2,000,000 (approximately USD 545,000), plus fees. Successful applicants are granted a ten-year residency permit. A 2021 legal update opened a narrow pathway to UAE citizenship for individuals with special talents, but this route is not accessible through investment: candidates must be nominated and evaluated by the UAE’s Cabinet, Executive Councils or the courts, and must speak fluent Arabic and meet a residency requirement.
La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyze not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.
