New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus Visa grants permanent residency, with a genuine pathway to citizenship for investors willing to make New Zealand their full-time home. The New Zealand passport provides access to 212 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 93.4% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 97.3% of global GDP and 98.5% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
A New Zealand passport reaches a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.
That leaves just 15 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa centre.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centres and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, a New Zealand passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of a New Zealand passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)
A New Zealand passport reaches most of the world’s most popular destinations including France, Spain, the USA and Italy. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

A New Zealand passport provides access to destinations that account for virtually all international leisure and business trips made worldwide — more than 98 out of every 100.
Some of the largest economies by GDP that a New Zealand passport grants access to are the USA, China, Germany, Japan and India. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

A New Zealand passport reaches destinations responsible for over 97% of global economic output, providing access to virtually every major business and investment market in the world.
New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus Visa stands out for how little time it asks investors to spend in the country to secure residency — as few as 21 days over three years in the Growth category, or 105 days over five years in the Balanced category. That is a genuinely low-friction route to a resident visa for a G7-adjacent, English-speaking economy with no capital gains or inheritance tax.
Citizenship, however, is a different proposition entirely. It follows New Zealand’s standard naturalization route, which requires five years of legal residence with physical presence of at least 1,350 days across those five years — including at least 240 days in each individual year. Investors whose priority is the residency visa itself, rather than the eventual passport, will find the Active Investor Plus route highly efficient; those who want the New Zealand passport specifically should plan for a materially larger time commitment than the investment visa alone requires.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked. Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what a New Zealand passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with New Zealand’s (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations a second citizenship would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would a New Zealand passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares New Zealand with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.
Compare your passports →New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus Visa offers two investment categories. The Growth category requires a minimum investment of NZD $5 million held for three years, with a minimum physical presence of just 21 days over that period; from June 2026, up to 20% of the investment (capped at NZD $1 million) may be directed to approved philanthropic donations, with the remaining 80% held in higher-growth assets such as managed funds and direct business investments. The Balanced category requires a minimum of NZD $10 million held for five years, with a minimum presence of 105 days, and allows a broader range of assets including bonds, listed equities and approved property developments. Both categories grant residency with the right to live, work and study in New Zealand, and can include a partner and dependent children.
New Zealand does not offer a direct citizenship by investment route. Citizenship becomes available afterwards through standard naturalization: applicants must hold a resident visa, have been physically present in New Zealand for at least 1,350 days across the five years before applying (including at least 240 days in each of those five years), and meet character and English-language requirements.
