Italy’s Golden Visa program offers a long-term pathway that may ultimately lead to Italian citizenship and a passport. The Italian passport provides access to 214 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 94.3% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 99.4% of global GDP and 99.6% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
An Italian passport reaches a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.
That leaves just 13 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, an Italian passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of an Italian passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)
An Italian passport reaches most of the world’s most popular destinations including France, Spain, the USA and Turkey. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

An Italian passport provides access to destinations that account for virtually all international leisure and business trips made worldwide — more than 99 out of every 100.
Some of the largest economies by GDP that an Italian passport grants access to are the USA, China, Germany, Japan and India. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

Italy’s Golden Visa is less a single fixed-cost program than a menu of routes – from a €250,000 investment in a qualifying innovative start-up to €2,000,000 in government bonds – with no minimum stay requirement to maintain the residency permit itself. Combined with Italy’s flat-tax regime for new residents, it’s one of Europe’s most flexible options for investors who want EU Schengen access and a genuine base in Italy, without being tied to a single asset class.
Citizenship, however, is a longer and more demanding route than the residency permit alone: it requires ten years of full-time tax residency in Italy, not simply holding the permit. Investors who genuinely intend to relocate will find this a natural extension of their plans; those whose end goal is specifically a European passport, without committing to live in Italy full-time, may find our Portugal Golden Visa program – where citizenship is possible after five years with no meaningful stay requirement – a more accessible route.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked. Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what an Italian passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with Italy’s (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations a second citizenship would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would an Italian passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares Italy with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.
Compare your passports →Italy offers one of Europe’s most flexible Golden Visa programs, with four qualifying investment routes: a minimum €250,000 investment in an Italian innovative start-up, €500,000 in an Italian limited company, €1,000,000 as a philanthropic donation, or €2,000,000 in government bonds – plus fees. There is no minimum stay requirement to maintain the residency permit, and the main applicant can include their spouse, dependent children and dependent parents. Italy does not offer a direct citizenship by investment route; citizenship only becomes possible after ten years of full-time tax residency.
La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyze not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.
