Unlock the Power of a Canadian Passport Through the Golden Visa Program

Canada Passport Access in 2026

The Canada Regional Business Immigration (CRBI) program offers a pathway to Canadian permanent residence through active business ownership, which over time can lead to citizenship and a passport. A Canadian passport provides access to 197 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 86.8% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 79.3% of global GDP and 95.0% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.

Countries & Territories Breakdown

A Canadian passport reaches a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.

  • 147 destinations fully visa-free
  • 44 with visa on arrival
  • 3 with a simple electronic travel authorization (eTA)
  • 3 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore.
◄ Counted as access · 197 Visa required · 30 ►
  • Visa-free 147
  • Visa on arrival 44
  • ETA / eTA 3
  • eVisa 3
  • Visa required 30

That leaves just 30 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.

But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story

For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.

At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.

Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.

La Vida Measures Passport Value Differently

That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:

  • Its share of global GDP (World Bank)
  • Its share of international visitor arrivals (UN World Tourism Organisation)

On that basis, a Canadian passport provides access to:

  • $83.1 trillion of global GDP (79.3% of the world economy)
  • 1,346.7 million international visitor arrivals (95.0% of worldwide travel)

In other words, the value of a Canadian passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.

(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)

La Vida’s Expert Insight

A Canadian passport combines near-total travel access – reaching 95.0% of the world’s international visitor arrivals, among the strongest travel-value scores in the La Vida Index – with the recognition that comes from G7 membership and full USMCA trade-bloc integration alongside the United States and Mexico. For investors who already hold, or are considering, a European second passport, Canada is best viewed as a complement rather than an overlap: it adds North American residency optionality, English and French bilingual credentials, and a stable common-law jurisdiction, rather than meaningfully more GDP access on top of an EU passport.

The Canadian Citizenship Pathway

Citizenship is not available directly through the CRBI program. Investors are initially granted a one-year work permit, which can be upgraded to permanent residency after one year. Following five years of permanent residency, it is possible to apply for Canadian citizenship, provided the minimum stay requirement has been met – three years of physical presence. The total timeline to Canadian citizenship typically takes around six to seven years from the initial investment.

Why Passport Access Matters

A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:

  • International business connection
  • Family relocation planning
  • Education opportunities
  • Cross-border banking
  • Property investment overseas
  • Lifestyle flexibility
  • Long-term geopolitical diversification
  • Global tax efficiency

Discover How Canada Compares With Your Current Passport

When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked. Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.

See what a Canadian passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with Canada’s (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations a second citizenship would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

Canada Regional Business Immigration: Residency by Investment

Canada’s Regional Business Immigration (CRBI) program is the country’s primary business-led pathway to permanent residence, designed for experienced business owners and entrepreneurs prepared to purchase or establish a real, operating business and take an active managerial role, particularly in the first year. Because CRBI operates at a provincial level, there is no single fixed investment amount – thresholds, net-worth requirements and language criteria vary by province. La Vida’s fully packaged CRBI solutions, including business sourcing, structuring and immigration coordination, start from a minimum of USD 250,000, alongside a minimum net worth of CAD 300,000 in liquid assets separate from the business investment; some provinces require total investment of USD 900,000 or more, with higher net-worth thresholds. Canada does not offer a direct citizenship by investment route; citizenship only becomes possible after naturalization, requiring 1,095 days of physical presence as a permanent resident.

La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyze not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.

Research & Methodology

The La Vida Passport Value Index is updated annually using visa policy information together with economic data from the World Bank and international visitor statistics published by the UN World Tourism Organisation.

Our methodology weights destinations according to their relative economic importance and international travel demand, providing a broader measure of passport utility than destination count alone.
