How To Get Residency In France By Investment
France offers investors and their families a structured route to residency through a €300,000 investment in a French operating company.
6 October 2026
France is attracting growing interest from our clients looking to establish residency in Western Europe. With its strong economy, excellent education and healthcare systems, and access to the wider Schengen Area, the country has plenty to offer international investors and their families.
What many investors may not realise is that France also offers a route to residency through business investment. For those considering a longer-term move, this can provide a pathway towards permanent residency and potentially French citizenship, with access to one of the world’s strongest passports.
According to the La Vida Passport Value Index, a French passport reaches 214 of the world’s 227 destinations through visa-free, visa-on-arrival, eTA or eVisa access, with only 13 still requiring a traditional visa. Those 214 destinations account for $104.3 trillion of economic output, or 99.4% of world GDP, and 1,410.7 million international visitor arrivals, or 99.6% of global travel.
What sets the French passport apart is where it takes you rather than how many places it reaches. The world’s five largest economies, the USA, China, Germany, Japan and India, are all within reach, as are Spain, Italy, Turkey and the UK, four of the most visited countries on the planet.
For many of our clients, that combination of near-total economic access and full EU citizenship is exactly what they’re looking for in a second passport. It means the freedom to live, work and do business anywhere in the European Union, with very few doors left closed beyond it.
What Is The France Residency By Investment Program?
The program is built on the French Investisseur Économique (France Talent Visa), a residence permit created under French law in 2016 to attract international investors, entrepreneurs and skilled professionals. Because it rests on existing legislation, it isn’t a new or experimental route. It’s an established legal pathway that France has used for close to a decade.
Investors place €300,000 in an approved French operating company. In return, they receive a four-year renewable residence permit that covers their spouse and dependent children.
La Vida work with a selection of active business investment opportunities which are ideal for passive investors looking for a fully packaged solution. As there are multiple routes available we would be happy to walk you through the best fit for you.
France joins the European residency programs La Vida already advises on, including the Portugal Golden Visa, the Greece Golden Visa, Hungary’s Guest Investor Program and Malta’s Permanent Residence Program. Each offers a different combination of investment type, timeline and lifestyle, and our advisers can help you compare them side by side.
Why Investors Are Looking At France
France is one of the world’s largest economies and has been Europe’s leading destination for foreign investment projects for several years running. Its government is investing €54 billion through France 2030, a national strategy focused on innovation, healthcare and industrial sovereignty. Companies eligible for the residency program are vetted for alignment with these same priorities.
For families, the appeal goes well beyond the economy. France has a universal healthcare system and some of Europe’s most respected universities and business schools, including HEC, ESSEC, Sciences Po and the Sorbonne. It is also the world’s most visited country, with a lifestyle that needs little introduction.
What we hear most often from clients is that France offers a combination they can’t find elsewhere. It’s a place to live, a gateway to the rest of Europe and a way to put capital to work in a real business.
Who Can Apply
The program is open to investors of any nationality, subject to standard compliance and due diligence checks. Applicants need to show they can make the qualifying investment from lawfully sourced funds.
There’s no French language requirement to obtain or renew the residence permit. There’s also no requirement to move to France full time.
The Investment Requirements
French law sets out the conditions for the investor route. Investors must:
- Invest a minimum of €300,000 in a qualifying French company, either directly or through a company you manage or own at least 30% of
- Hold the investment for at least five years
- Contribute to the French economy through the company’s activity
- Support job creation or the preservation of existing jobs
- Pass a full source of funds verification
Each investment is an active stake in a French business with genuine economic activity, rather than a passive holding. Qualifying companies need capital for expansion, restructuring or relaunch, with preference given to sectors aligned with France 2030. Investors usually sit on an advisory or supervisory board to show their involvement, without taking part in the day-to-day running of the business.
Opportunities are vetted for economic substance and compliance before they are offered to investors, so your capital supports a working company while securing your family’s residency.
Benefits For Investors And Their Families
A single investment secures residency for the whole household. The main benefits include:
- A four-year residence permit, renewable for as long as the investment is maintained
Inclusion of your spouse and dependent children in the same application - The right to live, work, study and run a business in France
- No employer sponsorship required
- Access to a G7 economy and the wider EU market
- Travel throughout the Schengen Area
- Access to France’s healthcare system and its leading schools and universities
- No minimum stay requirement and no language test for the residence permit
- Eligibility to apply for permanent residency after five years
Holding a French residence permit doesn’t automatically make you a French tax resident. That gives globally mobile families the flexibility to maintain residency while keeping their existing arrangements, and to settle in France on their own timeline if they choose.
How To Apply For French Residency By Investment
The application is coordinated from start to finish with a network of legal, banking and immigration partners in France. The indicative timeline from onboarding to residency card is two to five months depending on your profile, your country of application and consular processing times.
The process runs through six stages:
- Onboarding – A strategic review of your profile and objectives confirms your eligibility and the right structure for your application, and a French residential address is arranged, as one is required for every application.
- Escrow – Your funds are transferred into a secure escrow account.
- Compliance – KYC, anti-money laundering and source of funds checks are carried out by banking and legal professionals
- Visa D application – Your long-stay visa application is filed with the relevant French consulate
- Investment – Once your visa is issued, your capital is deployed into the approved French company
- Residency card – Your four-year residence permit is issued in France following your arrival
How Your Funds Are Protected
Investor security is built into every stage of the program. Funds are held in escrow in lawyer-regulated CARPA accounts, which are supervised under French law and provide full traceability.
Your capital is invested only after your residency application is approved.
The investment opportunities offered by La Vida have been independently verified by internationally recognised lawyers as meeting the Program’s requirements.
Every applicant also goes through a full due diligence process covering identity verification, source of funds and wealth, sanctions and politically exposed person screening, and anti-money laundering checks.
Permanent Residency And The Path To Citizenship
After five years of lawful residence, permit holders can apply for a French resident card, provided they have maintained the qualifying investment.
Investors who choose to settle in France can apply for French citizenship after five years of qualifying residence. Naturalisation requires French tax residency during that period, a recognised level of French language proficiency and integration into French society. Citizenship is granted at the discretion of the French authorities, and we work with clients to keep their file in the strongest possible position throughout each renewal cycle.
French citizenship brings full EU citizenship, with the right to live and work anywhere in the European Union, and a passport that reaches 99.4% of world GDP.
Is France Right For You?
France offers something rare among European residency routes. It combines a lawful, established residence permit with a direct investment in the French economy, full family inclusion and the freedom to live in France as much or as little as you like.
For investors who want a European foothold with genuine economic substance behind it, France is now firmly on the map. Speak to La Vida’s expert advisers to find out whether the program fits your goals, and how it compares with the other European residency programs we offer.
