A UK passport provides access to 213 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 93.8% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 97.2% of global GDP and 98.5% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
British passport holders can access a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four access categories.
That leaves just 14 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa centre.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to a small, low-traffic economy doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centres and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, a British passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of a British passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)
A UK passport reaches most of the world’s most popular destinations including France, Spain, the USA and Italy. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

A UK passport provides access to destinations that account for more than 98 out of every 100 international leisure and business trips made worldwide.
Some of the largest economies by GDP that a UK passport grants access to are the USA, China, Germany, Japan and India. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

A UK passport reaches destinations responsible for over 97% of global economic output, providing access to virtually every major business and investment market in the world.
A British passport combines near-total global reach – 97.2% of world GDP and 98.5% of international travel – with the international recognition and institutional trust that comes with UK citizenship, from Commonwealth ties spanning every populated continent to London’s continued standing as a global financial centre. Few passports pair that breadth of GDP access with such comprehensive travel coverage in the same package.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked.
Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what a British passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with a UK passport (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations it would bring – personalised to your passport, not a generic ranking.
La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would a British passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares the UK with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.
Compare your passports →The UK does not offer a citizenship by investment program, and currently there is no residency by investment or Golden Visa program, like those that exist in other parts of Europe. However, the UK Government is actively considering a Golden Visa program for the future – La Vida is monitoring these developments closely.
One alternative investor route currently exists in the meantime: the Innovator Founder visa, which replaced the earlier Innovator and Start-up visas in April 2023. It is designed for genuine entrepreneurs building innovative businesses, endorsed by a registered UK endorsing body – not a passive investment route.
For a more hands-off, passive investor visa, Golden Visa programs in Italy or Portugal are considerably more straightforward.
If you already hold a residency visa in the UK, it may be possible to become eligible for British citizenship and a UK passport over time – and if a new Golden Visa program does launch, visa holders would likely eventually become eligible for UK citizenship through the same naturalisation process.
Under the rules in force at the time of writing, this requires legal residence in the UK under an eligible visa for five continuous years to obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), followed by holding ILR or Settled Status for at least a further 12 months before applying for citizenship – a long-term pathway that typically takes six years or more in total. Applicants must also pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English Language Requirement.
The Government has confirmed plans to extend the standard qualifying period for settlement under its earned settlement reforms, so these timescales are expected to change; speak to us for the current position.

The La Vida Passport Value Index is updated annually using visa policy information together with economic data from the World Bank and international visitor statistics published by the UN World Tourism Organisation.
Our methodology weights destinations according to their relative economic importance and international travel demand, providing a broader measure of passport utility than destination count alone.
