Spain Passport Access in 2026

Spain’s Golden Visa program closed to new applicants in April 2025, though other legal pathways to Spanish residency and and, ultimately, Spanish citizenship remain. A Spanish passport provides access to 201 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 88.5% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 96.7% of global GDP and 97.5% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.

Countries & Territories Breakdown

A Spanish passport reaches a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.

• 155 destinations fully visa-free
• 38 with visa on arrival
• 4 with a simple electronic travel authorization (eTA)
• 4 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore.

That leaves 26 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.

But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story

For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.

At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.

Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.

• Its share of global GDP (World Bank)

Spain’s Golden Visa – previously one of Europe’s most popular real estate-based routes – closed to new applicants on 3 April 2025. Existing visa holders can continue to renew their permits, but no new investment-based applications are being accepted. Other legal pathways to Spanish residency remain open, such as the Non-Lucrative Visa, though these require genuine relocation and significant time spent in Spain, rather than the flexibility the Golden Visa once offered.

The Route to a Spanish Passport

Under Spain’s general naturalization law, permanent residency becomes available after five years of legal residence, and citizenship after ten (reduced to two years for nationals of several Ibero-American countries and a small number of others with historical ties to Spain). Spain’s Golden Visa: Program Status & Alternative Routes

Spain’s Golden Visa program, which for over a decade granted residency in exchange for a minimum €500,000 real estate investment (or alternative routes via company shares, bank deposits or government bonds), officially closed to new applicants on 3 April 2025. Existing Golden Visa holders may continue to renew their permits, but the investment-based route is no longer open to new investors. Legal pathways to Spanish residency still exist – including the Non-Lucrative Visa – though these require genuine relocation to Spain rather than the flexibility the Golden Visa allowed. Under standard naturalization law, permanent residency is available after five years of legal residence, and citizenship after ten years of full-time residence.
