Countries & Territories Breakdown

A South African passport reaches 139 of the world’s 227 destinations. That access breaks down into four access categories.

  • 73 destinations fully visa-free
  • 26 with visa on arrival
  • 3 with a simple electronic travel authorisation (eTA)
  • 37 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore
◄ Counted as access · 139 Visa required · 88 ►
  • Visa-free 73
  • Visa on arrival 26
  • eTA 3
  • eVisa 37
  • Visa required 88

That leaves 88 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa centre.

But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story

For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.

At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to a small, low-traffic economy doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centres and the world’s busiest travel destinations.

Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.

La Vida Measures Passport Value Differently

That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:

  • Its share of global GDP (World Bank)
  • Its share of international visitor arrivals (UN World Tourism Organisation)

On that basis, a South African passport provides access to:

  • $27.8 trillion of global GDP (26.5% of the world economy)
  • 524.1 million international visitor arrivals (37.0% of worldwide travel)

In other words, the value of a South African passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.

(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)

Travel Value – Top Destinations by Visitors

A South African passport reaches meaningful travel markets, led by Turkey, Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

What this means

A South African passport provides access to destinations that account for more than one in every three international leisure and business trips made worldwide.

Business Value – Top Destinations by GDP

Some of the largest economies accessible without a traditional embassy visa application include Japan, India, Brazil, Russia and South Korea. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

What this means

A South African passport reaches destinations responsible for just over a quarter of global economic output, providing access to a meaningful, if incomplete, share of the world’s leading business and investment markets.

La Vida’s Expert Insight

South Africa holds one of Africa’s higher-ranked passports, and its 61.2% destination reach reflects that. But its global access remains structurally limited in the ways that matter most for business and investment. No EU or Schengen country, the UK, the USA or China currently sits among the 139 destinations it reaches.

That is why the GDP-weighted figure of 26.5% sits so far below the raw destination count.

For South African investors, that gap – between a genuinely useful regional passport and one that opens the world’s largest markets – is usually the starting point for considering a second citizenship or residency.

Why Passport Access Matters

A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:

  • International business connections
  • Family relocation planning
  • Education opportunities
  • Cross-border banking
  • Property investment overseas
  • Lifestyle flexibility
  • Long-term geopolitical diversification
  • Global tax efficiency

How a Second Passport Compares With Yours

Your current passport already has its own access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations, not just add a similar set.

The South African passport’s biggest gap is in the EU, the UK, the USA and China, so the most valuable second passport is one that closes that specific gap.

See what a second passport could actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with South Africa’s (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations it would bring – personalised to your passport, not a generic ranking.

La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

South Africa Residency by Investment: No Direct Citizenship Route

South Africa does not offer a Golden Visa or citizenship by investment program in the style of Portugal or Grenada. It does have two established residency by investment routes.

The Financially Independent Permit grants permanent residence directly. Applicants must demonstrate a net worth of at least ZAR 12 million (approximately $727,000 as of August 2026) and financial self-sufficiency, and a fee of ZAR 120,000 is payable to the Director-General on approval.

The Business Visa is a temporary residence route for individuals investing in and operating a qualifying South African business. A separate permanent-residence category may also be available to qualifying business investors, subject to the applicable requirements

Neither route grants citizenship directly. South African citizenship is available only through naturalisation: applicants must hold permanent residence for a minimum of five years, including at least one year of residence immediately before applying, and meet standard language and good-character requirements.

La Vida offers more than 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyse not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.
