A Nigerian passport provides access to 84 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 37.0% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 6.2% of global GDP and 15.7% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
A Nigerian passport has limited overall access but still provides entry to a range of destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Pacific. This access breaks down into three main categories:
That leaves 143 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, a Nigerian passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of a Nigerian passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)
A Nigerian passport provides access to several significant travel markets, led by Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and the UAE. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

A Nigerian passport reaches destinations that account for just under one in every six international leisure and business trips made worldwide.
The largest economies a Nigerian passport grants access to are Thailand, the UAE, the Philippines, Iran and Malaysia. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

A Nigerian passport reaches destinations responsible for just 6.2% of global economic output – none of the world’s five largest economies (the USA, China, Germany, Japan or India) are among them.
A Nigerian passport’s value is concentrated almost entirely in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of Southeast Asia. No EU or Schengen country, nor the UK, USA, Canada, Australia or China, is currently among the 84 destinations accessible with a Nigerian passport. This is the single biggest driver of the gap between its destination count (37.0%) and its GDP-weighted value (6.2%). With a population of over 220 million and one of Africa’s largest consumer markets, demand among Nigerians for stronger global mobility is significant. La Vida understands this directly through years of working with Nigerian clients.
For Nigerians exploring a second citizenship, Grenada’s citizenship by investment program is one of the most established Caribbean routes, combining a straightforward donation option with the added benefit of E-2 treaty access to the United States. For those whose priority is a stronger passport specifically for African business and travel, São Tomé and Príncipe offers one of the most affordable citizenship by investment programs currently available, making it a genuinely accessible option for investors seeking an alternative African passport alongside their Nigerian one.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
Your current passport already has its own access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations, not just add a similar set. The Nigerian passport’s biggest gap is in the world’s largest economies and travel markets, so the most valuable second passport is one that closes that specific gap.
See what a second passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with a Nigerian passport (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations it would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would a second passport add to yours?
Our free Passport Value Report compares any residency or citizenship program we offer against your Nigerian passport and shows exactly what it would add — by destinations, GDP and travel — personalized to you, not a generic ranking.
Compare your passports →Nigeria does not currently offer a residency by investment or citizenship by investment program of its own. Nigerians looking to expand their global access do so through other countries’ programs instead. See our guide to the second citizenship and residency options Nigerian citizens consider most, including current program costs and what each one genuinely adds.
La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyze not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.
The La Vida Passport Value Index is updated annually using visa policy information together with economic data from the World Bank and international visitor statistics published by the UN World Tourism Organisation.
Our methodology weights destinations according to their relative economic importance and international travel demand, providing a broader measure of passport utility than destination count alone.
