Hungary Passport Access in 2026

Hungary’s Golden Visa program grants a long-term residence permit, with citizenship a possibility – though not guaranteed – for those who later naturalize after many years of full-time residence. The Hungarian passport provides access to 214 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 94.3% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 99.4% of global GDP and 99.6% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.

A Hungarian passport reaches a high percentage of the world’s destinations. This access breaks down into four main categories.

• 150 destinations fully visa-free
• 29 with visa on arrival
• 6 with a simple electronic travel authorization (eTA)
• 29 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore.

That leaves just 13 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa centre.

But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story

At €250,000, Hungary’s Guest Investor Residence Permit matches Portugal’s lowest investment tier, but offers something few other Golden Visas do: a residence permit valid for ten years and renewable indefinitely, with the option to upgrade to permanent residency after five years of full-time residence in Hungary.

Hungary’s Citizenship Pathway – An Important Caveat

Unlike Portugal, Greece, Italy, Latvia or Cyprus, Hungary’s Guest Investor program has no defined route to citizenship. Naturalization may be possible after many years of full-time residence and meeting additional criteria, but – unlike most other EU Golden Visa programs – there is no fixed timeline and no guarantee. Investors whose primary goal is long-term, flexible EU residency will find Hungary a genuinely strong option; investors whose end goal is specifically an EU passport within a predictable timeframe should consider our Portugal or Malta programs instead, both of which offer a clearer route to citizenship.

Hungary Golden Visa: Residency by Investment

Hungary’s Golden Visa – officially the Guest Investor Residence Permit – requires a minimum investment of €250,000 into an approved real estate investment fund, plus applicable fees. The permit is valid for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely; investors may also apply to upgrade to permanent residency after five years of full-time residence in Hungary. Hungary does not offer a citizenship by investment program, and there is no defined path to citizenship: naturalization may be possible after many years of full-time residence and meeting additional criteria, but this is not guaranteed.
