A German passport provides access to 215 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 94.7% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 99.5% of global GDP and 99.6% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
German passport holders can access a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.
That leaves just 12 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, a German passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of a German passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)

A German passport provides access to destinations that account for more than 99 out of every 100 international leisure and business trips made worldwide.
Some of the largest economies by GDP that a German passport grants access to are the USA, China, Japan, India and the UK. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

A German passport reaches destinations responsible for over 99% of global economic output, providing access to virtually every major business and investment market in the world.
A German passport offers near-total global reach – 99.5% of world GDP and 99.6% of international travel. This places it among the strongest passports in the La Vida Index, alongside the recognition and business credibility that comes with holding the passport of Europe’s largest economy. As an EU and Schengen passport, it carries the same freedom-of-movement value across the bloc as any other member state’s, while Germany’s own diplomatic and trade network extends that reach further still, particularly across manufacturing and industrial markets worldwide.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
When choosing a residency or citizenship by investment program, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked. Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what a German passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with a German passport (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations it would bring – personalized to your passport, not a generic ranking. La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would a German passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares Germany with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.
Compare your passports →Germany does not offer a traditional golden visa program, in the style of Portugal or Greece, and has no citizenship by investment route. There is no way to obtain German residency through passive investment – no real estate purchase, fund subscription or government bond qualifies. The available routes are the Entrepreneur Visa and the Self-Employment Visa, both of which require an applicant to establish and personally run a genuine business in Germany. These are active routes rather than passive investor visas, and involve considerably more hands-on commitment than a straightforward golden visa program. If an applicant already holds German residency through one of these routes, naturalization for citizenship may become possible, requiring a minimum of five years of lawful residence and a German language test, among other standard requirements.
La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyze not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.

The La Vida Passport Value Index is updated annually using visa policy information together with economic data from the World Bank and international visitor statistics published by the UN World Tourism Organisation.
Our methodology weights destinations according to their relative economic importance and international travel demand, providing a broader measure of passport utility than destination count alone.
