Bulgarian Passport Access in 2026

A Bulgarian Golden Visa program offers a pathway to permanent residency in the EU. A Bulgarian passport provides access to 209 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 92.1% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 73.2% of global GDP and 93.5% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.

Countries & Territories Breakdown

Bulgarian passport holders can access a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.

• 145 destinations fully visa-free
• 29 with visa on arrival
• 6 with a simple electronic travel authorization (eTA)
• 29 with an eVisa – straightforward online access that most passport indices ignore.

That leaves just 18 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa center.

But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.

Why Visa-Free Counts Don’t Tell the Whole Story

For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.

At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to an island nation doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centers and the world’s busiest travel destinations.

Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.

That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:

• Its share of global GDP (World Bank)
• Its share of international visitor arrivals (UN World Tourism Organisation)

On that basis, a Bulgarian passport provides access to:

• $76.8 trillion of global GDP (73.2% of the world economy)

What this means

A Bulgarian passport reaches destinations responsible for close to three-quarters of global economic output, providing access to many of the world’s leading business and investment markets.

A Bulgarian passport carries full EU membership value – Schengen-area travel, and the right to live, work and study across the European Union. Its GDP and travel-value scores (73.2% and 93.5%) put it comfortably ahead of most non-EU CBI options, while Bulgaria’s growing Black Sea and Balkan trade links add a regional dimension distinct from Western EU passports.

The Bulgaria Golden Visa Does Not Lead Directly to Citizenship

Bulgaria’s Golden Visa is open and active, granting permanent residence through a qualifying investment. It does not, however, provide a direct or guaranteed route to citizenship. Bulgaria’s earlier fast-track citizenship option – previously available in around 18 months by doubling the qualifying investment – was permanently closed in 2022 and has not been reinstated. Bulgarian citizenship today is available only through the country’s standard naturalization process, separate from the investment program itself.

Bulgaria Golden Visa: Residency by Investment

Bulgaria’s Golden Visa program is open and active, granting permanent residence through a minimum investment of €512,000 into an approved investment vehicle – Bulgarian stocks, exchange-traded funds, or alternative investment funds – held for a set period. This is separate from Bulgaria’s earlier fast-track citizenship by investment scheme, which allowed citizenship in around 18 months by doubling the qualifying investment; that fast-track option was permanently closed in 2022 and has not been reinstated.

The Golden Visa does not provide a direct or guaranteed path to citizenship. Bulgarian citizenship is only available through the country’s standard naturalization process, subject to Bulgaria’s general residence and language requirements, and is separate from the investment program itself.
