An Austrian passport provides access to 200 of the world’s 227 destinations. That’s 88.1% of all worldwide destinations. This represents access to 97.0% of global GDP and 98.0% of the world’s most visited travel destinations, based on international visitor arrivals.
Austrian passport holders can access a high percentage of the world. This access breaks down into four main categories.
That leaves just 27 destinations in the world that require a traditional visa application – the slow route of sending your passport away, booking appointments, or queuing at an embassy or visa centre.
But counting destinations doesn’t give the full picture.
For years, passport rankings have focused almost entirely on one metric: the number of destinations accessible without a visa.
At La Vida, we believe this only tells part of the story. Visa-free access to a small, underdeveloped island doesn’t offer the same practical value as access to major economies, financial centres and the world’s busiest travel destinations.
Most passport indices treat every destination equally. Whether it’s access to France or a tiny Pacific island, each counts as one point. In reality, the destinations a passport unlocks vary enormously in terms of business opportunities, travel demand and economic importance.
That’s why we developed the La Vida Passport Value Index. Our passport comparison tool is built for one purpose: helping people decide whether a second citizenship is worth the investment, and which program delivers the most value for their situation. Rather than simply counting destinations, our methodology weights each one according to:
On that basis, an Austrian passport provides access to:
In other words, the value of an Austrian passport lies not only in the number of destinations it reaches, but in the significance of those destinations.
(You can read exactly how we calculate these figures in our Passport Value Data and Methodology.)
An Austrian passport reaches most of the world’s most popular destinations including France, Spain, the USA and Italy. Each bar shows that country’s share of worldwide international arrivals.

An Austrian passport provides access to destinations that account for more than nine in every ten international leisure and business trips made worldwide.
Some of the largest economies by GDP that an Austrian passport grants access to are the USA, China, Germany, Japan and India. Each bar shows that country’s share of global GDP.

An Austrian passport reaches destinations responsible for over 97% of global economic output, providing access to nearly every major business and investment market in the world.
Austria does not offer a citizenship or residency by investment program in the conventional sense.
The only route outside ordinary long-term residency is discretionary naturalisation reserved for individuals who make an extraordinary contribution to the Austrian economy.
This can be done through a joint venture or direct investment that creates jobs or increases exports.
It is also available to people who achieve outstanding distinction in science, sport, philanthropy or the arts that benefits the country.
There is no published investment threshold and no procedural guarantee: each case is assessed individually, and approval sits entirely with the Austrian authorities.
For investors specifically seeking a reliable, defined route to a second passport, Caribbean citizenship by investment programs – such as Antigua & Barbuda or Grenada – offer a fixed cost, a published process and a clear timeline measured in months rather than an open-ended discretionary review.
For those prioritising an EU base first, with citizenship following a defined period of residence, our Portugal Golden Visa program offers a set investment threshold and a path to citizenship after five years.
An Austrian passport is genuinely one of the world’s most powerful – but for most investors, it isn’t a passport that can be planned for.
A stronger passport can provide far more than easier travel. Depending on your objectives, improved international mobility may support:
When choosing a second citizenship or residency option, the fit between a second passport and your existing one is often overlooked.
Your current passport already has its own visa access list – anything a second passport adds should complement those destinations. Doubling up on the same access offers no real benefit.
See what an Austrian passport would actually add for you. Our free Passport Value Report tool compares your current passport with Austria (or any of the programs we offer) and shows the additional GDP access, travel access and destinations a second citizenship would bring – personalised to your passport, not a generic ranking.
La Vida is the only consultancy offering this level of analysis, and the report is free.

What would an Austrian passport add to yours?
A second passport should complement your current one, not duplicate it. Our free Passport Value Report compares Austria with your existing passport and shows exactly what extra access — by destinations, GDP and travel — the combination unlocks.
Compare your passports →Austria does not operate an official Golden Visa or citizenship by investment program.
Austrian citizenship can, in exceptional circumstances, be granted to individuals who make an extraordinary contribution to the country under Section 10(6) of the Austrian Citizenship Act.
These decisions are entirely discretionary, with no published investment threshold and no guarantee of approval.
Qualifying contributions include significant investment in Austria’s economy – through a joint venture or direct investment that creates jobs or increases exports – or outstanding achievement in science, sport, philanthropy or the arts that benefits Austria.
There is no official cost to publish, because there is no defined investment product: each application is assessed individually on its merits.
For investors seeking a clearly defined route to a second passport, Caribbean citizenship by investment programs offer a fixed cost and a published timeline.
For those prioritising an EU base with a defined path to citizenship, Portugal’s Golden Visa program is a lower-cost, passive route worth considering.
La Vida offers over 18 residency and citizenship programs worldwide. We analyse not just visa-free travel, but the full picture – family eligibility, timescales, costs and long-term benefits – to identify the program that best fits your needs.

The La Vida Passport Value Index is updated annually using visa policy information together with economic data from the World Bank and international visitor statistics published by the UN World Tourism Organisation.
Our methodology weights destinations according to their relative economic importance and international travel demand, providing a broader measure of passport utility than destination count alone.
