African Passports Strength and Weakness

African Passports Ranking

Mauritius holds Africa’s strongest passport in 2026 at 59th globally, while the Central African Republic sits lowest on the continent at 197th.

The La Vida Passport Value Index ranks 199 passports across 227 destinations, weighting each destination by its share of world GDP and its share of international visitor arrivals rather than counting destinations equally.

Access to Germany and access to a small island economy carry the same weight in most indices. They do not in ours. The June 2026 edition draws its economic data from the World Bank and its travel data from the UN World Tourism Organisation.

The table below lists all 54 African passports with their destination count, GDP reach and travel reach.

Africa’s Strongest Passports

Mauritius and Seychelles sit well clear of the rest of the continent. A Mauritian passport ranks 59th globally, reaching 179 of 227 destinations, 61.3% of world GDP and 81.2% of global travel. Seychelles ranks 62nd on 175 destinations, 60.0% of world GDP and 81.4% of global travel.

The two are close enough that the choice between them rarely turns on access alone. Mauritius holds a marginal lead on destinations and GDP reach, Seychelles on travel reach by two tenths of a percentage point. No third African passport comes within 20 percentage points of either on GDP reach.

Neither country runs a citizenship by investment program. Mauritius offers residency by investment, which can lead to citizenship under the country’s naturalisation laws over a longer timeframe.

For applicants who want comparable access on a citizenship route, Grenada ranks 63rd on 179 destinations, 59.6% of world GDP and 79.4% of global travel, matching the Mauritian passport’s destination count.

Where South Africa Now Sits

South Africa ranks 119th globally, reaching 139 destinations, 26.5% of world GDP and 37.0% of global travel. That is the third-highest destination count on the continent after Mauritius and Seychelles.

On GDP-weighted reach, the metric the Index ranks by, South Africa places eighth in Africa. Togo, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, Libya and Somalia all reach a larger share of world GDP despite reaching fewer destinations, because the destinations they access carry more economic weight per entry.

For a South African holder, the practical gap is the EU Schengen Area, the UK and the USA, none of which the passport reaches without a visa.

Africa’s Weakest Passports

The Central African Republic ranks 197th globally, the lowest in Africa, reaching 61 destinations, 4.1% of world GDP and 7.5% of global travel. South Sudan follows at 196th on 75 destinations and 4.4% GDP reach, and Algeria at 193rd on 66 destinations and 5.1% GDP reach.

Cameroon and Burundi hold the continent’s weakest travel reach at 7.6% and 9.0%, both reaching 61 destinations. Somalia, often cited as Africa’s weakest passport, now ranks 115th on 85 destinations and 31.9% of world GDP, placing it mid-table for the continent.

The Nigerian Passport

Nigeria ranks 189th globally, reaching 84 of 227 destinations, 6.2% of world GDP and 15.7% of global travel. For Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, that places the passport near the foot of the continental table.

The constraint shows up in business and education rather than leisure travel. Entrepreneurs and professionals travelling for work face visa applications for most major markets, and families seeking international schooling for their children run into the same process. Both are among the most common reasons Nigerian enquiries reach La Vida.

Two routes address it. Caribbean citizenship by investment delivers a second passport in months without a residency requirement. Grenada reaches 179 destinations and 59.6% of world GDP, Antigua and Barbuda 186 destinations and 58.8%, St Kitts and Nevis 191 destinations and 43.9%, and Dominica 183 destinations and 55.5%. Programs start from a $200,000 donation or a qualifying real estate purchase, and each grants full citizenship for the applicant and their family, transferable to future generations.

The Portugal Golden Visa is a residency by investment program, not a citizenship program. A minimum investment of €500,000 into a qualifying private equity or venture capital fund secures residency for the applicant and their family, with a stay requirement of seven days a year and Schengen travel from day one.

Following Lei Orgânica 1/2026, in force from 19 May 2026, it is possible to apply for citizenship after ten years of legal residency. A Portuguese passport ranks 15th in the Index, reaching 214 destinations, 99.4% of world GDP and 99.6% of global travel.

São Tomé And Príncipe: Africa’s Citizenship By Investment Option

São Tomé and Príncipe runs the continent’s only citizenship by investment program. Citizenship is available through a donation to the National Transformation Fund starting at $90,000 for a single applicant, or $95,000 for a family of two to four, plus $5,000 for each additional dependent.

The passport ranks 170th in the Index, reaching 86 destinations, 10.1% of world GDP and 19.3% of global travel. Its strength is regional. It reaches more African nations than most Caribbean or Pacific alternatives, which makes it a fit for applicants whose business travel runs across the continent rather than out of it.

GDP reach is the share of world GDP (World Bank 2023) a passport accesses visa-free. Travel reach is the share of world international visitor arrivals (UN Tourism 2023). Destinations cover 199 countries and 28 territories. Visa on arrival, eTA and eVisa count as access. Figures from the La Vida Passport Value Index, June 2026.

A passport’s value comes down to what it adds to the one already held. A Mauritian or Seychellois passport already covers most of the destinations a second citizenship would bring, so the gain is narrow. A Nigerian, Cameroonian or Central African passport starts below 7% of world GDP, and almost any program on the market represents a step change rather than an increment.

La Vida’s free Passport Value Report models exactly that. It compares an existing passport against any program La Vida offers and returns the additional destinations, GDP reach and travel reach the combination unlocks, personalised rather than generic. Contact our expert advisers to run the report and find the program that adds the most for your situation.
